The Operation

In preparation for the operation the eye is numbed with local anaesthetic drops. A sterile bande is then applied and a speculum is mounted to hold the eye open. Light pressure will be felt during fixation.

In the LASEK procedure, in contrast to LASIK, both the corneal incision, and as such the suction ste, are unnecessary.

Placement of the microtrepans and the dissolving of the epithelium

The eye's covering layer (epithelium) is marked by an instrument known as a microtrepans and dissolved from the cornea by a tissue dissolving substance (20% alcohol).

Epithelium movement and laser treatment

The epithelium is moved aside with a small spatula - the exposed cornea is laser treated.

Epithelium re-alignment

Following treatment the epithelium is then re-aligned and a bande contact lens is placed over the treated area. The procedure is complete.
